How to track the prompts that surface your brand in AI answers

You cannot see the actual prompts other people type into ChatGPT™, Claude®, Gemini™, or Perplexity™: there is no prompt console for AI assistants the way Google Search Console shows you search queries. Tracking therefore works differently: you build a representative basket of prompts your buyers plausibly ask, run that basket against each provider on a schedule, and record where your brand appears, prompt by prompt, over time. Done with a fixed basket and multiple runs per prompt, this turns AI visibility from a one-off screenshot into a trend you can act on.

Why is there no "prompt console" for AI answers?

Search engines expose query data because your site participates in the result: when someone clicks through, the query travels with them into your reporting tools. AI assistants synthesize answers instead of listing links, and no major provider shares prompt logs with brands. Even when an assistant cites your page and sends a visitor, the referral almost always arrives without the prompt attached.

So the unit of measurement has to change. Instead of observing other people's prompts, you choose a set of prompts that represents your buyers, ask those prompts yourself, and treat the answers as samples of what real users see. Everything below follows from that reframing.

Step 1: Build a representative prompt basket

The basket is the foundation, and it should read like things a real buyer would type into a chat box, not like keywords. Good sources:

  • Buyer interviews and sales-call recordings: the exact phrasings prospects use to describe the problem
  • People Also Ask boxes and autocomplete suggestions for your category terms
  • Community threads: Reddit, industry forums, and the Slack or Discord groups where your buyers compare options
  • Your own search-query data, rewritten as conversational questions
  • Support tickets and onboarding questions, which become branded knowledge prompts

Mix unbranded discovery prompts ("best X for Y") with branded ones ("is [your brand] good for Y"). Unbranded prompts tell you whether assistants put you in the consideration set at all; branded prompts tell you whether they describe you accurately once someone has heard of you. If you want a quick manual starting point before formalizing a basket, our hand-check guide walks through the one-prompt-at-a-time version.

Step 2: Scan the basket across providers on a schedule

ChatGPT™, Claude®, Gemini™, and Perplexity™ retrieve from different indexes and weight sources differently, so a brand can be prominent in one and absent in another. Scan every provider your audience actually uses, and for each prompt and provider record at least:

  • Whether your brand was mentioned at all
  • Where it appeared in list-style answers (top pick, mid-list, afterthought)
  • How it was framed (praised, listed without comment, hedged, criticized)
  • Which sources the answer cited, and whether any of them were yours

One run per prompt is not enough. Answers vary between runs of the identical prompt on the identical provider, because generation is probabilistic and the retrieval layer changes underneath it. Across a sample of our own 2026 scan corpus (33,000+ responses from the four major AI search providers), a single run surfaced only 78.5% of the brands three runs surfaced for the same prompt and provider, which is why serious tracking runs each prompt several times: the result becomes a rate rather than a coin flip. The mechanics of that variance are covered in why AI answers change between runs.

Step 3: Keep the basket fixed, or the trend means nothing

Comparability lives at the prompt level. "Visibility improved this month" is only meaningful if the prompts behind both data points are the same prompts. Swap out five prompts between scans and the movement you see is composition change, not market change.

Practical rules:

  • Freeze the basket before the first scheduled scan
  • When you add prompts, track the additions as a new cohort with its own start date, or re-anchor the whole trend and note the break
  • Never silently edit a prompt's wording; a reworded prompt is a new prompt
  • Annotate every basket change in whatever tool or sheet holds the data

This is the single most common way prompt tracking goes wrong, and it is invisible after the fact: the chart still looks clean, it just no longer means anything.

Step 4: Segment prompts by intent and funnel stage

Visibility differs sharply by intent, and a single blended average will hide that. Segment the basket so you can see where you are strong and where you are absent:

Intent segment Example prompt shape What visibility here means
Best-of / category "best [category] tools for [audience]" You are in the consideration set
Alternatives / comparison "alternatives to [competitor]" You are reachable by switchers
How-to / problem "how do I [job to be done]" You surface before buyers know the category
Branded knowledge "is [your brand] good for [use case]" Assistants describe you accurately

A brand that dominates branded prompts but never appears in best-of prompts has an awareness problem inside AI answers, and the fix (comparison and category content) is different from the fix for weak branded answers (clearer documentation and structured product pages). Segment-level tracking is also the foundation for measuring your position against named competitors; our share-of-voice guide covers that layer.

Step 5: Watch AI referral traffic as the downstream signal

Your analytics can confirm that AI answers send real visitors: look for referrers such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, and copilot.microsoft.com. Treat this as validation, not as the primary measure. Referrals confirm that some answers turn into clicks, but they arrive without the prompt, they undercount (many AI answers satisfy the user with no click at all), and they say nothing about the prompts where a competitor was recommended instead of you. The prompt basket measures the answer layer; analytics measures the trickle that escapes it.

How often should you rescan?

Weekly is enough for most brands. AI answers drift as models update and retrieval indexes refresh, but they do not swing meaningfully hour to hour, so daily scans mostly measure noise while multiplying cost. Monthly is the floor if you want a usable trend line. Add an out-of-cycle scan after events that plausibly move answers: a major content push, a model release, a competitor launch.

Whatever the cadence, keep the variance rule: multiple runs per prompt on every scan, so each data point is a visibility rate, not a single sample.

What tools track prompt-level visibility?

A spreadsheet works at small scale, but the workload compounds quickly: prompts times providers times runs, every week, plus consistent judgment calls on mentions and sentiment. Purpose-built tools in this category include Gen3 AI Visibility, Profound, Otterly.AI, and the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit, among others, all of which monitor prompts across AI providers in some form.

Gen3 AI Visibility tracks prompt-level visibility across scans with a fixed-basket method by design: every trend is computed against an anchor scan's prompt set, so a change in prompt composition cannot masquerade as a change in the market, and each trend point discloses how many of the basket's prompts it is based on.

Measure it

The fastest way to start is to see what AI assistants say about your brand today: run a free Pulse visibility check from the homepage. Then build your basket and put it on a schedule, or browse the rest of the guides at /learn/ for the scoring, variance, and share-of-voice layers of the method.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see the actual prompts people type into ChatGPT™ or other AI assistants?
No. AI providers do not expose prompt logs the way Google Search Console exposes search queries, and referral visits from AI assistants arrive without the prompt attached. The practical alternative is to build a representative basket of prompts your buyers would plausibly ask and test those prompts yourself on a schedule.
How do I choose which prompts to track for my brand?
Pull phrasings from buyer interviews, sales calls, People Also Ask data, community threads, and your own search-query reports, then rewrite them as conversational questions. Cover each intent that matters: best-of category prompts, alternatives prompts, how-to prompts, and branded knowledge prompts. Coverage across intents matters more than raw prompt count.
How often should I check my brand's visibility in AI answers?
Weekly is enough for most brands, and monthly is the floor for a usable trend line. AI answers drift as models and retrieval indexes update, but day-to-day movement is mostly noise. Run each prompt multiple times per scan so you measure a visibility rate rather than a single sample.
Why do AI assistants give different answers to the same prompt?
Answer generation is probabilistic and the retrieval layer underneath it changes, so the identical prompt can return different brand lists between runs on the same provider. Credible tracking accounts for this by running each prompt several times and reporting visibility as a rate.
What is a fixed prompt basket in AI visibility tracking?
A set of prompts that stays the same between scans so that changes in visibility reflect the market rather than changes to the prompt list. If the basket changes, the trend is no longer comparable. New prompts should be tracked as a separate cohort with their own start date.
